Rook is a light sleeper. He can’t help it. With the world on his shoulders and danger always imminent, he keeps his guard up almost always.

It does help that he’s at the end of his own hallway, with the soothing reflections of water and Fade-crafted fish swimming calmly beyond his window. But he still rouses easily—particularly with the sound of footsteps echoing in the hall beyond his door.

He sits up, already slipping on the shoes he keeps under his daybed, always quickly available in case of emergency.

When he pushes into the hall, he’s shocked to see Lucanis. Concerned, he opens his mouth to speak, only to see the glow of Lucanis’s eyes and a sharp sneer that doesn’t suit him.

Not Lucanis.

“…Spite,” he acknowledges. He must have been trying to get through the Eluvian again. No doubt, he’d been staved off by Taash and is here now to bitch Rook out for it.

“Compost and salt. Subtle sweet honeysuckle and the tang of iron.”

Rook sighs and puts his hands on his hips. “In a language I can understand, maybe?”

He snarls in frustration, putting Rook on edge.

“I think that’s enough. Put Lucanis back in charge.”

“No!” he hisses. “Spotted ladybug. Old anger. Crying and crying and crying and bleeding our ears!”

Rook narrows his eyes and tries to piece together his words. Obviously, he’s trying to convey something he thinks is important, but he doesn’t seem to see people so much as abstractly perceive them as collections of scents and concepts. Thus, communication can be a challenge.

“Do something,” Spite demands.

“I would if you spoke plainly,” Rook says.

“Gah! Crying! The singing brings the crying!”

“I don’t know what you—” He stops short, realization dawning on him suddenly. “Lace. You’re talking about Lace. Harding.”

“Yes.”
